Meeting at the lower car park at the newish Wonderland Gardens Bandshell, I never know whether the walk will be leisurely or on the wild side. This Thursday morning, the ramble turned out to be suitable for sandals, and still two hours long.
26 hikers joining all the other people keeping fit in Springbank Park.
The park - an education in trees and fauna.
The abominable and apparently sophisticated tent caterpillar at work. Fortunately not as wide spread as in other years.
A day later and we were back in Springbank Park. This time my friend had invited us to accompany her family to a pot-luck party. Before dinner I took A. around the well known loop of the park and we encountered more wildlife:
a slightly confused mole - we put it back on the grass to dig more tunnels,
and a selection of geese.
After all that exercise we had dinner. As always I had brought along my lucky pot of home-made potatoe salad. Others had gone to the shops and contributed pizza, donuts, bought salads, watermelon, fizzy drinks and many other goodies from all over the world. An Iranian family contributed these mouth-watering charcoal chicken skewers, ready to be rolled into pita bread and salads.
There was the Mennonite farmer from Aylmer (No. 20 on the map) who showed off his fabulous organic produce and advertised his fresh-from-the-farm vegetable box scheme: $25 per week to receive enough vegetables for a family of four. I have been drawn to this before, but in the end have never settled for it on a permanent basis.
