Peace like a river

Leif Enger's Peace Like a River was Sherwood library's book-club choice before the summer. I didn't read it then - but as it was warmly recommended to me by one of my friends, I took the book out again and had a go.

It was readable. I even wanted to know how the story progresses. But it would help if you had a bit of faith. Otherwise the references to the divine and the miracles that happen throughout the story are a bit straining. I had had enough of this line of thought near the very end of the book - where the reader is treated to some sort of ante-chamber of heaven. I got the impression that Mr. Enger wanted to finish the book after five years in the making and gave it one last miraculous twist. Language-wise this book is rather compelling. Story-wise I was not quite so sure.
