Paddling Thames River

A new visitor arrived and had to be picked up from Pearson Int. Airport in Toronto - at 1:30 in the morning! - and we were in for another set of exciting outings in and around London. The two first stops were the library (and yes, even our visitor found CDs he wanted to listen to), the Goodwill store (no, he did not wish to be treated to a new outfit), Victoria Park and Ribfest - but more for the skateboarding, really.

My friends offered a canoe trip down Thames River, which had long been on my wish list. A perfect opportunity on a perfect day. The water had been released from Fanshawe dam - and the river, which is normally too shallow to paddle on, was even slightly washed out. A few ripples here and there, but no real play spots. Besides, with two canoe novices in the boat, playing on a wave might not have been the right thing to do anyway.

We had entered the river at the Canoe Club, on Wonderland Road and spent a good few hours letting the world go by. I could see all the areas I had hiked before: Springbank Park, Komoka Provincial Park - but this time from a very different angle. It certainly was much quicker to use the river than to walk along its banks. Those fur traders and loggers sure knew what they were doing.

The end of our cruise, at the bridge in Delaware West.
